NAFSA is a Tribally led, federally recognized 501(c)(6) non-profit trade association dedicated to protecting Tribal sovereignty and advancing responsible financial services in Indian Country. Our mission is to empower sovereign nations through financial innovation, policy advocacy, and industry leadership.
Member in NAFSA is more than a designation – it’s a commitment to building the economic future of Tribal nations and Indigenous communities through sovereingty-first solutions and advocacy.
How To Apply
To begin your membership application, first select the appropriate membership type based on the criteria below:
Select Your Membership Type:
- Sovereign Nation Member Application – For federally recognized Tribes
- Sovereign Nation Affiliate Membership – For federally recognized Tribal governments not currently operating or directly engaged in a tribal financial services enterprise but wish to support NAFSA’s mission and explore participation in the financial services sector.
- Associate Member Application – For supporting entities, service providers, ANCs, and others

Sovereign Nation Membership
Initiation Fee (one-time): $2,500
Voting Rights: Yes
Board Eligibility: Yes
The Sovereign Nation Membership is reserved exclusively for federally recognized Tribal governments that are actively engaged in the financial services industry. These Tribes exercise inherent sovereignty and maintain a government-to-government relationship with the United States. Sovereign Nation Members guide the strategic direction of NAFSA through governance, policy advocacy, and leadership.
Who Should Apply:
Federally recognized Tribes that currently operate or oversee a tribal financial services enterprise, fintech platform, lending entity, or related financial regulatory framework.
Membership Benefits:
- Your Tribal Nation will strengthen and enhance the advocacy efforts of NAFSA
- Voting rights and eligibility for NAFSA board of directors’ positions
- Dedicated Tribal representation through Tribal council appointment of a NAFSA delegate
- Participation in advocacy and policy discussions on Capitol Hill
- Exclusive Tribal policy briefings and regulatory updates
- Discounts on NAFSA events and trainings
- Access to Tribal economic development resources

Annual Membership dues must be paid in full to NAFSA each year on the anniversary date of each member’s inaugural membership to be considered a member in good standing.

Board Eligibility: No
The Sovereign Nation Affiliate Membership is available to federally recognized Tribal governments that are not currently operating or directly engaged in a tribal financial services enterprise but wish to support NAFSA’s mission and explore participation in the financial services sector.
Who Should Apply:
Federally recognized Tribes not currently engaged in lending or financial services, but interested in advocacy, education, and future industry participation.
Note: Sovereign Nation Affiliate Members are non-voting and not eligible to serve on the Board of Directors. Affiliate Members may apply to upgrade to full Sovereign Nation Membership upon entering the financial services industry, subject to Board approval.

Board Eligibility: No
The Associate Membership is open to tribally owned enterprises, Alaska Native Corporations (ANCs), financial institutions, industry service providers, technology platforms, and other entities committed to supporting NAFSA’s mission to advance tribal sovereignty, economic development, and responsible financial services innovation.
Who Should Apply:
Businesses, institutions, and organizations—tribal or non-tribal—that provide services, technologies, or support to Tribes operating or entering the financial services sector.
Membership Benefits:
- Access to NAFSA policy briefings, newsletters, and regulatory updates
- Invitations to NAFSA-hosted trainings, summits, and member events
- Networking opportunities with Tribal financial leaders and decision-makers
