Recent polls suggest that the Trump Administration’s distaste for the CFPB may not be shared by his constituents. A December study released by GloverParkGroup (GPG) regarding regulatory intervention showed only 19% of Trump voters believed Wall Street is overregulated. Only 7% of those polled felt the CFPB should be abolished, and 55% of Trump’s voters believed the CFPB should be left alone or expand its powers. This is in stark contrast to the current actions of Congressional Republicans, seeking to eliminate the CFPB.
Another survey by Lake Research Partners for Americans for Financial Reform found that 50% of survey takers had never heard of the CFPB or held no opinion of the agency. Only 5% of self-identified Democrats and 6% of self-identified Republicans possessed a very unfavorable opinion of the CFPB. With so many major issues receiving attention from the Trump Administration and Congress, it is unclear whether or not public opinion on the CFPB is being communicated effectively to lawmakers.
