Trump’s Proposed 2019 Budget Reigns in CFPB, Mixed Bag for Indian Country

Feb 13, 2018News

President Trump presented his proposal for the federal government’s FY 2019 budget on February 12th. Through his proposal, Trump hopes to end wasteful spending, expand economic growth and opportunity, support American working families, and other initiatives.

One agency where the President sees spending cut opportunities is with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). The 2019 budget would shift CFPB operations under the Congressional appropriations process with the agency’s budget shrinking $6.4 billion over the next ten years. The budget slash at the CFPB comes at a time in which the agency is restricting its own activity and promoting a strategy of restraint.

Although the Department of the Interior would see a 16% decrease in operating funds for 2019 under the proposed budget, Indian schools may benefit from the $50 billion Rural Infrastructure Plan, part of the President’s massive trillion dollar infrastructure plan. It will now be up to Congress to mull the President’s proposed budget and work to fund the government in the coming fiscal year.
